South Dakota breaks ground on new men’s prison

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — After five years of debates and task forces, there will be a new prison in Sioux Falls. The state broke ground on the new facility Wednesday morning.

The Rehabilitation Task Force will also have a meeting following the ground breaking.

The state purchased the land for $12.5 million. The project’s price is capped at $650 million.

In September, a special session of the South Dakota Legislature passed a $650 million prison bill to replace the 144-year-old prison called the Hill in Sioux Falls. The plan is for about 1,200 multi-custody beds and 300 dorm-style beds…
