Volunteers harvest citrus for distribution to families in need across Santa Barbara County

Volunteers and nonprofit groups gathered this week to harvest hundreds of pounds of citrus for distribution to families experiencing food insecurity across the region.

Staff and volunteers with Veggie Rescue, joined by members of Santa Ynez and Los Olivos Rotary clubs, harvested about 350 pounds of oranges at Rancho Tajiguas, a property stewarded by the Gaviota Coast Conservancy, according to Eryn Shugart, Veggie Rescue executive director.

“This is what community looks like,” said Shugart. “Neighbors coming together to harvest fresh food that will be on tables within 24 hours — it’s simple and incredibly powerful.”…
