Man charged after allegedly lunging at Albany police officers with knife

ALBANY — A 36-year-old man was charged after allegedly lunging at police officers with a knife while inside an ambulance on New Scotland Avenue on Thursday.

The man was charged with two counts of menacing a police officer, a felony, and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, according to a news release from the Albany Police Department.

City police arrived on New Scotland Avenue, not far from Albany Medical Center, around 1:10 p.m. after receiving a call from Bethlehem police requesting their assistance with a “mentally unwell patient” who was being transported to the hospital, according to the news release. When officers arrived, they saw a man inside the ambulance allegedly charge toward them with a knife, the department said.
