State, city target Kalihi Stream homeless camps for removal

KALIHI, Oahu (KHON2) — Work continues along the Kalihi Stream to eliminate the remnants of homeless camps.

The area is near Keehi Lagoon and Sand Island, where the state said about 25 to 26 encampments had been built into the mangroves. People also lived on floating platforms on the stream.

After the recent storms, the state said a lot of debris washed into the ocean.

“All of the encampments are being taken out. The trash and debris are being brought up. And we’re cutting all the mangroves to make sure that nobody comes back to this area again,” said Ed Sniffen, Department of Transportation Director…
