DEM: 5,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Mount Hope Bay

BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — Shellfishing activity has been put on hold for a portion of Mount Hope Bay due to a sewage spill on Friday.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management issued an alert that about 5,000 gallons of untreated sewage were “accidentally discharged from the Mt. Hope Pump Station” into the bay.

Until further notice, all waters north of Mount Hope Point in Bristol to the Massachusetts state line have been closed to shellfish harvesting. (See map below.)
