HONOLULU (KHON2) — Following input from community members, the Hawaiʻi Board on Geographic Names voted to change the name of Oʻahu’s Sand Island neighborhood to “Mauliola.”
This is the second name change issued by the board in recent months, with the board voting in December to change the name of the “Island of Hawaiʻi” to simply “Hawaiʻi.” That change has since been forwarded to a federal board for review, in a process that takes approximately one year.
