Honolulu’s Costco Gran Fondo this Saturday promises food, fun

HONOLULU (KHON2) — What started as a joke in Hawai‘i is now rolling into reality.

On Saturday, May 23, the Hawai‘i Bicycling League will host its first-ever “Costco Gran Fondo”. It’s a 76-mile bike ride connecting all four Costco locations on O‘ahu in one food court-fueled adventure.

The ride begins at 7:30 a.m. in Hawai‘i Kai before heading west to Kapolei Costco. It continues uphill to Waipio Costco, then down to Iwilei Costco, and finally returns to Hawai‘i Kai with a route passing through Waikīkī and around Diamond Head.

  • Start in Hawai’i Kai.
  • 32 mile ride to start, first stop at Kapolei Costco.
  • 13 miles to Waipio Costco, with biggest hill.
  • 15 miles to Iwilei Costco
  • 15 miles to Hawai’i Kai, with a dip through Waikiki and around Diamond Head.

Organizers describe the event as being “fueled by dreams and the Costco food courts”. They’re encouraging riders to “get that dog in ya” with stops for hot dogs, pizza, iced coffee and other food court favorites along the way…
