Officials say fire in Gila will continue to grow

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A fire burning in the Gila, about 15 miles east of Glenwood, New Mexico, is expected to continue to grow, fire officials said Friday, Apirl 24.

The Hummingbird Fire is currently at 25 acres and 0 percent containment. The fire was caused by lightning and was first detected on Monday, April 20.

The fire is burning among dense patches of brush, dead and down fuels and standing dead trees, known as snags, left behind from the 2012 Whitewater-Baldy Fire.

“With a lack of natural barriers, steep terrain, and a prolonged severe drought area-wide, the Hummingbird Fire will continue to grow in the Gila Wilderness,” fire officials said…
