Murder charge ruled self defense in deadly 2023 Midfield shooting

A court order has just dismissed the murder charge against Rueben Gerard Gillam for his part in a deadly 2023 shooting. Gillam, 57-years-old at the time of the incident, shot and killed Anthony Derrell Young, 38, in what a judge has found to be justified self defense.

Gillam and his legal team proved in court that his fight with Young fulfilled all four requirements of Alabama’s “Stand Your Ground Law.” Through photographic evidence, witness statements and testimony from the case’s lead detective to dismiss Gillam’s charges with prejudice.

The “Stand Your Ground Law” states that someone was in a legal place they have the right to be in, that they weren’t the initial aggressor, they weren’t involved in anything illegal and that they were justified in the use of deadly force in self defense…
