Roughly $5M worth meth found in cargo trailer at port of entry in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility in San Diego seized more than 3,000 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside a cargo trailer earlier this month, authorities announced.

The massive drug bust occurred on April 14, when officers referred a 2017 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer and its 31-year-old male driver, a Mexican citizen, for a secondary inspection.

According to CBP, the shipment was declared as “corrugated cardboard boxes.” However, a nonintrusive inspection raised red flags when officers detected irregularities in the trailer’s front wall. A K-9 unit then alerted agents to the same area.

During a physical search, officers discovered 300 packages wrapped in clear plastic and containing a crystal-like substance. Testing later confirmed the substance was methamphetamine, with a total weight of 3,078.10 pounds.
