Woman to serve 2 years in prison in son’s 2025 drowning

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY/WGHP) — Tiffany Lynn Smith walked out of the Norfolk Courthouse Friday after being sentenced to serve two years in prison in the death of her 2-year-old son, who drowned in her pool last year.

On July 20, 2025, Smith and her husband were drinking together at their home. The couple’s children — their 2-year-old son and two older children from Ms. Smith’s husband’s previous relationship — were at the home as well.

That afternoon, Ms. Smith’s husband and two older children left to go to an amusement park while Ms. Smith stayed home with the toddler. Shortly after their departure, Ms. Smith, who was heavily intoxicated and had also been using marijuana, fell asleep drunk and left her toddler, who was still awake and playing, unattended in the backyard. The backyard had a swimming pool but no gates to prevent the toddler from accessing it, and he was not wearing a life preserver.

At some point during the several hours that Ms. Smith was asleep, her son fell into the pool and drowned…
