Cyclist coasts to easy sentence after altercation sends golf cart driver to hospital

A cyclist coasted to an easy sentence this past week following an altercation this past year which sent a Villager to the hospital.

Dominick Chellino Jr., 68, of the Village of Chitty Chatty, was sentenced to six months probation on a charge of disorderly conduct this past week in Sumter County Court. Three more serious charges, including a felony charge of burglary with assault or battery, were dropped in exchange for the plea.

Chellino, who was active in the Joliet Bicycle Club in Illinois before moving to Florida’s Friendliest Hometown, was riding at about 10 a.m. Sept. 18 with fellow cyclists in the Village of Fenney, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

A man in a golf cart was on his way to play golf when he “saw a large group of bicyclists in the golf cart lane and began to pass them,” according to an arrest report. The golf cart driver realized that one of the cyclists “sped up and started cussing” at him. Several bicyclist “began following him” and ordered him to stop near the entrance to the Village of Fenney.
