Madison public schools projected to lose 700 students in next 5 years

The Madison school district is projected to lose more than 700 students over the next five years due to declining birth rates, fewer anticipated students in new housing developments and other factors, according to a new analysis.

The projections are part of the district’s “Building for the Future” initiative that includes redrawing the maps determining where students attend school. The School Board plans to vote on new maps next February after rounds of community feedback.

While one of the main impetuses for the boundary and attendance review is Dane County’s anticipated population growth, the school district’s enrollment hasn’t kept pace.
