While hospital-insurer contract disputes have made headlines across the country this year, one of the longest-running and most consequential standoffs has been playing out in California’s Central Valley — largely out of the national spotlight — for nearly three months.

Community Health System — California’s fifth-largest healthcare provider, operating four hospitals in the Fresno area including Community Regional Medical Center, Clovis Community Medical Center, Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital, and Community Behavioral Health Center — has been out of network with Blue Shield of California since February 1, 2026. Despite months of negotiations before and after that deadline, no new agreement has been reached.
