Frenchtown Hotel Run-In Near I‑75 Ends With Deputy Killing Person With Knife

Yesterday’s late-morning encounter outside a Frenchtown Township hotel ended in gunfire, leaving one person dead and a Monroe County sheriff’s deputy on administrative leave while outside investigators try to piece together what happened.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy confronted an individual armed with a knife near North Dixie Highway and Interstate 75 on Sunday. The deputy reported using a Taser twice before firing two shots. Emergency responders and the deputy provided medical aid, but the person died at the scene, officials said.

Deputies were dispatched at 11:08 a.m. on a report of a person who had “threatened a citizen while soliciting money,” according to CBS News. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office told CBS that when the deputy made contact, the individual had a knife. The deputy reported deploying a Taser twice and then firing two gunshots that struck the person.

Officials have not said whether the knife was being waved or raised when the shots were fired, leaving a key detail in the use-of-force encounter still unanswered.
