Orleans clerk-elect warns of ‘chaos’ as bill to eliminate his position nears governor’s desk

Calvin Duncan, the clerk of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court, is warning of major disruptions to the local justice system if a pending legislative proposal becomes law. Speaking on WBOK last week, Duncan said eliminating his position could push an already strained system into disarray.

“Our whole criminal legal system is going to be in chaos,” Duncan said. “We barely function now.”

The proposal, Senate Bill 256, is moving quickly through the legislative process and is expected to reach Governor Jeff Landry’s desk within days. Lawmakers recently added an amendment specifying that the measure would take effect immediately upon the governor’s signature. Landry has already indicated he intends to sign the bill…
