Humane Society plans larger Brookings shelter

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The Brookings Regional Humane Society is looking to build a new facility with double the space and they are asking for the Brookings County Commission’s help.

During a commission meeting April 21, BRHS leaders detailed their reasons for needing a new space, including overcrowding and public safety concerns. They are asking the commission for $500,000 to help fund the new facility.

“We have been consistently at or over capacity for the last several years, and we’re forced to turn away animals every day,” Executive Director Maia Moore told the commission.

The city gifted the shelter 2.5 acres on the east side of town to build a new facility. They are renting their current facility, which is a little bigger than 4,400 square feet, with only nine dog kennels and limited isolation areas for sick animals…
