Local crews join statewide effort as fires burn more than 53,000 acres

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Firefighters from Burke County and Columbia County have deployed to southern Georgia to help battle two major wildfires that have burned more than 53,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes.

The Pineland Road and Highway 82 fires have combined to scorch the acreage, prompting assistance through the Georgia Mutual Aid Agreement. Burke County sent one brush truck and two firefighters, while Columbia County deployed one engine, one wildland unit, six suppression personnel and one member assigned to the incident management team.

“We don’t know what Mother Nature has in store,” said Amylia Lester, Burke County Emergency Management Agency public information officer. “You don’t always realize the benefit until something like this happens and resources are needed.”…
