Three men have been arrested in connection with the tragic arson attack that claimed the lives of four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his great aunt, Mary Holt, in Edenderry, County Offaly.
An Garda Síochána confirmed the arrests on Tuesday evening, stating that two men in their 20s and one man in his 30s were taken into custody earlier that day. They are currently being detained under anti-gangland legislation and can be held for up to seven days as the investigation continues.
These latest arrests bring to four the number of individuals questioned in relation to the fatal house fire that occurred on the evening of Saturday, December 6, 2025, at Mrs. Holt’s home in Castleview Park. Previously, a man in his 20s was arrested in January but was released without charge.
The force released a statement emphasizing their ongoing commitment to uncovering all circumstances surrounding the attack. The investigation is being actively pursued, with detectives moving swiftly on the new suspects.
The heartbreaking incident has deeply affected the family, who have publicly appealed for those responsible to come forward. The deaths follow the earlier loss of Mary Holt’s brother, Christy ‘Crunchie’ Holt, who died in a separate fire at the same residence, which was ruled accidental.
Family members have described their grief as overwhelming. Margaret Holt, Christy’s sister, spoke of the family’s pain and the need for justice and closure.
Jessie, Mary’s niece, called for the perpetrators to admit their actions, saying, “They were innocent. I want justice for both sides of the family because this has gone on too long.”
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan has condemned the attack as a “murderous act” intended to kill innocent people. He indicated that one line of inquiry links the attack to individuals involved in the drugs trade, underscoring the wider societal harm caused by drug-related crime.
The tragic loss of young Tadhg and Mary Holt has left the community reeling, as authorities continue their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
