Charter schools continue to grow across the state, but Birmingham City Schools continues to push back against new ones in the city.
With a perfect record of denying charter applications, the city school system and a new potential school are both awaiting a decision from the state’s charter commission, which has sometimes overruled district objections.
Birmingham’s latest rejection of a charter application was on display in a public meeting earlier this month, although the actual denial came in January. This time it was xS.T.R.E.A.M. Minds Academy, a proposed east Birmingham K-8 charter school, with a stated focus on “a dynamic interdisciplinary model that integrates Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math.”…
