Chatham County Police to respond to illegal burns, file charges

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — The Chatham County Police Department announced that, as of Tuesday, it will respond to illegal fires, issue citations and file charges, as 91 Georgia counties remain under a burn ban.

The punishment under the county ordinance is up to $500 and 30 days in jail. Depending on the severity of the fire, Georgia state laws may be cited that could include felony charges.

In the social media post, a department spokesperson said, “This is not our preferred method of operation, but the risk is simply too great to issue warnings at this time.”…
