Syracuse Hancock International Airport warns drivers I81 construction could cause delays

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) is advising passengers, employees, and airport visitors to plan extra travel time as the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) begins a major resurfacing project along Interstate 81 that may impact access to the airport during certain times.

The project will resurface and improve a stretch of I81 between Exits 5B5A4B (Hiawatha Boulevard / Destiny USA / Bear Street) and Exit 8 (U.S. Route 11 / Mattydale). While construction is not occurring at the airport, overnight and early morning lane and ramp closures south of SYR may result in delays for travelers approaching the airport from the south.

Work is scheduled to begin Sunday, May 3, 2026, and is expected to continue through Fall 2026. To minimize traffic disruptions, NYSDOT has indicated most construction activities will take place during evening and early morning hours, though traffic pattern changes are expected…
