SWANTON, Ohio — The Ohio Air National Guard’s 180th Fighter Wing has emerged from an intensive six-day Combat Readiness Inspection (CRI) with a clear message: they remain one of the most lethal and responsive combat units in the world.
From April 20–26, 2026, approximately 1,000 Airmen were pushed to their limits in a high-stress, contested environment designed to simulate real-world warfare. The exercise tested the wing’s ability to generate rapid combat power and execute complex missions under extreme pressure.
A “Surprise” Within a Test
The week was defined by more than just scheduled drills. While already deep into the CRI, the wing was hit with a no-notice inspection from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Simultaneously, the unit successfully managed the real-world deployment of over 100 members to various exercises across the country.
“Our surprise visit from NORAD was a welcomed, though unplanned, addition to this week’s focus,” said Colonel Curtis Voltz, Commander of the 180FW. “When challenged, we respond with expertise and professionalism.”
