Evanston man charged with attempted murder in Mason Park shooting

An Evanston man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with the April 23 shooting at Mason Park, the Evanston Police Department announced Tuesday.

In a news release, the department said that detectives identified Zacar Lee, 20, as a “person of interest” in the shooting, which video shows involved “two small groups exchang[ing] gunfire in the park before leaving the scene.” Police found multiple shell casings but have identified no gunshot victims or injuries. The incident’s proximity to Evanston Township High School caused the school to enter a soft lockdown for part of the afternoon.

Chicago police officers arrested Lee during a traffic stop on April 24, one day after the shooting, in West Garfield Park on Chicago’s West Side. According to the Evanston Police Department, officers recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun from the car Lee was in, which was later towed to the department as evidence.

“Lee was charged in Chicago with unlawful possession of a firearm and appeared in court at 26th Street and California Avenue,” the department said. “After that court appearance, Evanston detectives took Lee into custody in connection with the Evanston investigation.”…
