HONOLULU (Island News) – The multi-agency initiative, Safer Roads, Together 2026, has been launched with the core focus of enhancing public safety by reducing serious injuries and traffic fatalities across Oahu.
According to recent data and enforcement trends, many serious and fatal crashes on Oahu continue to involve preventable behaviors such as speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving.
The initiative seeks to reduce serious crashes by combining high-visibility traffic enforcement (including saturation patrols, OVUII checkpoints, and targeted enforcement in high-risk areas), public safety messaging, and community outreach. The focus is on addressing behaviors and conditions that cause these incidents.
The campaign will focus on behaviors most closely associated with serious crashes, including:
- Speeding
- Impaired driving
- Distracted driving
- Nighttime visibility and pedestrian safety
The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) will be expanding its campaign this year to include structured grassroots engagement in priority districts, including Kaneohe, Kapolei and Kalihi, where recent fatal and critical traffic incidents.
Officers in Kaneohe will be focused on speed enforcement, distracted driving, impaired driving and moped safety violations, including helmet compliance.
