A five-year-old girl named Maria Clara Aguirre Lisboa was tragically buried alive by her mother and stepfather, according to a recent forensic medical report. The post-mortem examination revealed that Maria Clara died from mechanical asphyxiation caused by burial. Her body was discovered on October 14, 2025, in a shallow, cement-covered grave behind the home she shared with the couple in Itapetininga, Brazil.
The forensic report found soil in Maria Clara’s windpipe, indicating she was still breathing when buried. It also detailed head injuries consistent with blunt force trauma sustained before the burial. Authorities confirmed that the body had been buried for approximately 20 days.
Maria Clara’s paternal grandfather initially reported her missing to child services in early October, prompting a police investigation that began on October 8. During the inquiry, police uncovered a disturbing audio message sent by Rodrigo Ribeiro Machado, 23, to the girl’s father in which he admitted to her death and urged the father to stop seeking answers.
Machado, along with Luiza Aguirre Barbosa da Silva, 25, both of whom are now in custody, have confessed to the killing. Investigators stated that both individuals regularly abused Maria Clara, both physically and psychologically, with Machado reportedly having ties to the PCC gang and a history of criminal behavior. The lead investigator, Franco Augusto, emphasized that the abuse involved not only the child but also her mother, and that the stepfather used the child to exert psychological pressure.
On October 15, Maria Clara was laid to rest at Colina da Paz Cemetery. Due to the advanced decomposition of her body, a wake could not be held.
Only relatives from her biological father’s side attended the funeral. Maria Clara’s aunt expressed her heartbreak, saying, “My heart is in pieces knowing that your life was taken in such a cruel and unjust way.”
Both Machado and Da Silva face charges of murder with aggravating circumstances and concealing a corpse, with their court appearance scheduled for May 19. The case has shocked the local community and highlighted the devastating impact of domestic abuse.
