Lammes Candies, a candy chain founded and based in Austin, Texas, said it is permanently closing all of its retail stores. The company cited difficult economic headwinds, including changing market conditions and long-term sustainability necessitated the shutdown. The move ends what is considered Austin’s oldest family business that has operated continuously since 1885. The firm said it will continue to focus on online sales as long as its existing inventory holds out, but is closing its stores down now. Five generations of one family have now closed their historic 141-year-old company.
Lammes Candies closes all stores after 141 years in business
On April 24, the company posted a sign at its Texas location in Round Rock, near Austin, first reported by My San Antonio. The sign read that the owners had decided to close. The flagship store at 5330 Airport Boulevard in Austin, where the company’s manufacturing plant is located, was to be next, though co-owner Lana Schmidt told TheStreet that they had not yet set a date for that store’s closing.
The owners told TODAY.com that it was a painful choice. The statement goes on:
