Lake Hancock water control structure closes, upper Peace River to ‘go dry within days’

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A state official said severe drought conditions have led to tough decisions being made regarding water flows in Polk County.

Portions of the Peace River watershed are going to “go dry” in the coming days, he said.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District, known as SWFWMD, closed the Lake Hancock P-11 water control structure, which is designed to release water during the dry season that was stored during the rainy season.

“When we have these very severe droughts like this, we have now depleted that storage in Lake Hancock,” said Randy Smith, natural systems and restoration bureau chief at SWFWMD. “That upper maybe 15 or so mile portion of the river from Lake Hancock, maybe to Fort Meade, is going to go dry, extreme low flows.”…
