VCU Wilder School dean to step down after 8 years

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) longest-serving dean is stepping down this summer after an eight-year tenure.

The school announced on Thursday that Susan Tinsley Gooden, dean of the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, will leave the leadership post on June 30 and return to the classroom next year. Gooden will remain a professor in VCU’s public administration program after spending a year in Vienna for research and academic.

The school has not announced Gooden’s replacement.

Gooden took over the role in May 2018 in an interim capacity. She was appointed dean in April 2020. During Gooden’s tenure, the Wilder School created the Research Institute for Social Equity, strengthened the Wilder Fellows program for the next generation of public service leaders, expanded the Virginia Capitol Semester program and advanced the reach and influence of the Commonwealth Polls
