At J.W. Coon hearing, parents warn closure plan is moving too fast

J.W. Coon Elementary staff and parents told Cumberland County Board of Education members April 29 that while they would like a new school, the board’s recommendation to close the school for the next school year feels rushed.

In February, the board approved recommending that J.W. Coon, Brentwood and Sherwood Park elementaries consolidate into one new elementary school for 900 students at J.W. Coon Elementary’s location on Hope Mills Road in Fayetteville

A recommended timeline that was approved by the board in April proposes that J.W. Coon close for the 2026-2027 school year. Its students would transfer to Sherwood Park or Brentwood elementaries, while a new school is built and possibly completed by the 2029-2030 school year…
