‘It made my skin crawl’ – Mobile victim’s mother recounts jailhouse meeting with killer

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Janice Chandler waited almost 27 years to confront the man who killed her son in 1999.

At a sentencing hearing Friday for Jamelle Quentin Thomas, Chandler asked him directly about an encounter at Mobile County Metro Jail after the defendant’s arrest in 2020. Chandler said she was volunteering at a jail ministry program and saw Thomas but did not know who he was.

“Do you recall that day you stared at me?” she asked Thomas, as he stood before Mobile County Circuit Judge Jay York.
