GENOA, Ohio (WTVG) – This village of about 2,200 people was incorporated back in 1868, but before then, it was known as Stony Ridge, which is now the name of a different community in our area.
“The old wife’s tale is that they were going to record the name at the county, a new name, and they couldn’t remember… it was named after a town in Italy, and they couldn’t remember which town and someone said Genoa,” explained Mayor Brent Huston. “I don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s the story I was always told.”
Before this village was even incorporated, Genoa played an important role in the Civil War, with over 100 residents from the area joining the Union Army. Subsequently, those veterans formed the foundation of this community, and in 1885, they built the town hall that still stands today…
