Milliken man gets 35 years for killing 21-year-old in drunken driving crash in Big Thompson Canyon

A Milliken man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Thursday for killing 21-year-old Shaylin Crosby and injuring her two friends in a head-on drunken driving crash in the Big Thompson Canyon on Aug. 15, 2024.

In between soft cries and small pockets of laughter at the 3.5 hour sentencing hearing on Thursday afternoon, Shaylin Crosby’s friends and family said she had dreams of helping her community as an EMT, that she was a talented musician and singer, a lifeguard who took pride in teaching others how to swim, and that she was a friend to anyone.

“She was going to respond to calls like the one that took her life,” said Shaylin’s sister Anastasia Crosby during the hearing in 8th Judicial District Court in Fort Collins.

The facts weren’t disputed by either attorney. Defendant Shane Mills’ blood alcohol at the time of the crash was 0.264, six times greater than Colorado’s legal limit to drive, according to information from the District Attorneys Office…
