Spirit Airlines cancels all flights at Richmond International Airport amid shutdown

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Spirit Airlines has canceled all flights at Richmond International Airport (RIC) after the low-cost air travel company announced Saturday that it’s shutting down.

RIC issued a travel advisory Saturday morning, saying that all Spirit flights to and from the airport, as well as those across its network, have been cancelled as the airline has ceased operations. The announcement came after Spirit — which once operated hundreds of daily flights and employed about 17,000 people — said it’s going out of business after 34 years.

The closure marked the end of Spirit’s eight-year run at RIC, which began March 15, 2018. The airline’s primary destination routes were to and from Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It also tested other routes over the years, including to Las Vegas, Tampa, Detroit and New York’s LaGuardia Airport…
