Tallahassee weather alert: heat peaks before storms arrive

Tallahassee is in for a dramatic and potentially dangerous Saturday. Meteorologist Candace Campos and the News 6 Weather Team have issued a Weather Alert Day covering this evening into Sunday morning, as what is expected to be the hottest day of 2026 gives way to a severe storm window that could bring damaging winds, large hail and an isolated tornado threat.

The heat arrives first

Before the storms, the heat. This afternoon temperatures are forecast to climb into the lower 90s inland and the upper 80s along the coast, making it the warmest day the region has recorded all year. Winds out of the west-southwest are expected to strengthen as the day progresses, with gusts between 30 and 35 mph possible ahead of storm development. Rain chances remain low through the morning and early afternoon, meaning the atmosphere will have plenty of time to build heat and instability before the front arrives.

That sequence is precisely what makes today’s setup more concerning than a typical storm day. The longer the atmosphere bakes under afternoon heat before a cold front pushes through, the more energy becomes available for storms to tap into when the line finally arrives.

When storms are expected and how serious the risk is

The Storm Prediction Center has placed a broad area of North Florida under a Slight Risk, or Level 2 out of 5, for severe weather today, covering Panama City, Apalachicola, Tallahassee, Perry and Cross City. The rest of Central Florida sits under a Marginal Risk, or Level 1 out of 5. Damaging wind gusts and hail are the primary concerns, though forecasters say an isolated tornado cannot be entirely ruled out.

The National Weather Service meteorologist in Tallahassee confirmed that all modes of severe weather are in play, with damaging wind gusts representing the most likely threat. The storm line is expected to move through as an all-day event beginning in the morning and continuing at least through early to mid-afternoon, depending on how quickly the front advances…
