Near-record heat today before storms return to South Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — South Florida is facing a dangerously hot day, with near-record temperatures and increasing weather changes on the way.

West Palm Beach is the climate site that has the highest risk of tying or beating the high temperature record for today. The previous record is 94 degrees which was set in 1929 and the forecasted high temperatures is 94.

This afternoon will bring unseasonable heat across the region. High temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s along the east coast, with mid to upper 90s possible inland. Even though humidity is slightly lower than typical, the heat alone can still be dangerous, especially with prolonged time outdoors. Staying hydrated, taking breaks, and avoiding peak afternoon heat will be important.

The heat, lower humidity and winds are contributing to the fire weather risk. There is a Red Flag Warning in effect for the area from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Winds will also pick up out of the south, becoming gusty at times. These winds will create hazardous conditions for boaters across the Atlantic waters.

By tonight, the pattern begins to shift. A weakening line of showers may approach from the Gulf, though coverage and strength remain uncertain.

On Sunday, a cold front moves through the region, bringing a better chance for showers and thunderstorms. While severe weather is not expected to be widespread, some storms could produce heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Rainfall amounts will generally be modest, but a few areas could see higher totals where storms persist…
