Pedaling for a Purpose: Hundreds unite in Virginia Beach to ‘Crush Cancer’

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — More than 400 people gathered in Virginia Beach Sunday at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club for the Crush Cancer: Cycle for Survival event, pedaling to raise funds for rare cancer research and clinical trials.

10 On Your Side’s Andy Fox and the WAVY Warriors joined in the effort. Fox has been a supporter of the event since its inception in 2015.

The event directs every dollar raised to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in New York. A representative from the world-renowned center attended the event to highlight how local fundraising efforts translate into medical advancements.

“This year alone, MSK has made significant strides in genetic testing, which makes sure that every single one of our patients receives a personalized treatment plan based on the DNA of their specific disease,” the representative said.

Rosemary Wilson and Tony Nero founded the Virginia Beach chapter of the fundraiser in 2015 after both lost their spouses to cancer. Nero described the personal loss that motivated his involvement in the fight against the disease.

“You know, she fought it, but it was short lived,” Nero said. “She passed away, and I knew what I was going to do after that: fight back to where we are today.”…
