‘Era of empire bins’: Mamdani announces expansion of trash containerization program piloted in West Harlem

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced in mid-April that trash containerization would be implemented in six new districts across New York City after the success of a pilot program in West Harlem.

The city is aiming to fully implement trash containerization across the chosen districts by the end of 2027. The program’s expansion is part of the mayoral administration’s larger effort to usher in an “era of empire bins” across all New York City districts within the next five years—a goal welcomed by District 7 City Council member and Majority Leader Shaun Abreu, CC ’14, who spearheaded the pilot program in West Harlem.

“I’m very proud that our neighborhood led the way on a policy that will soon go citywide,” Abreu wrote in a statement to Spectator. “All of New York deserves clean, rat-free streets, and we are one major step closer to that goal.”…
