Here’s what’s behind a mysterious brick doorway along a busy Cumberland County road

Hundreds of drivers pass it each week without slowing down — a brick doorway cut into a hillside along Good Hope Road in Hampden Township.

The structure has been called everything from a crypt, to a root cellar or even a cave. But longtime residents say the stone-lined space tucked into the hillside off the bustling road is something else entirely: a spring house.

The spring house, which got its name thanks to the cool, running water that flows inside, is owned by residents of the property in the 900 block of Mill Road that backs up to Good Hope Road…
