Federal judge considers evidence and testimony in Springfield man’s wrongful death case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A Springfield woman is fighting the federal government. Tina Slay says her son’s death never should have happened.

“I still wake up in the middle of the night and reach for my phone, hoping to get a text from him until it sets in that he’s not here. And that’s nearly 6 years after,” she said.

Tina Slay’s son, Caleb Slay, was shot and killed by Drug Enforcement Administration agents after a brief struggle outside of his Springfield home in November of 2020. Authorities say they were conducting surveillance when they encountered Caleb Slay, who was not the subject of their investigation. The shooting was deemed justified by the Greene County Prosecutor no criminal charges were filed. A judge would dismiss the federal lawsuit filed against the officers and city, but allowed the wrongful death portion to move forward.
