Renderings show what to expect from second phase of San Diego Airport Terminal 1 construction

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — New renderings of the second phase of construction on the new Terminal 1 at the San Diego Airport give a sneak peek at what to expect when it fully opens in 2028.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority launched the second phase of construction of the new Terminal 1 at the San Diego International Airport in September 2025.

It will bring 11 more gates and more amenities, like customer lounges and a children’s play area, along with more restaurants and retail shops, faster security and infrastructure improvements.

The airport on Tuesday released new renderings of the future T1 following Phase 1B construction, in celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week.

Once the second phase of construction is complete in early 2028 there will be a total of 30 new gates in the new Terminal 1 for travelers, the airport said.

The previous Terminal 1 closed in September 2025 before it was demolished to make way for Phase 1B construction.

The airport authority said the new Terminal 1 will not only have new gates and amenities, but will also feature new technology, allow for more capacity and have upgraded passenger spaces infrastructure.

The new Terminal 1 will also have new pathways for bikes and pedestrians.

While Phase 1B construction is ongoing, vehicles traveling between Terminals 1 and 2 will continue to use the detours in place…
