AGFC urges anglers to end ‘bucket stocking’

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT/Edited News Release) – We’ve all heard stories of someone “helping” a local lake or pond by tossing in a few extra fish, but “bucket stocking” is actually illegal in Arkansas and can wreck a fishery, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Fisheries Division says.

Arkansas waters are carefully balanced by biologists who track everything from growth rates to predator-prey ratios. When unauthorized fish are added — especially in new or renovated lakes — it throws that balance out the window. If predators like bass or crappie are introduced before prey populations are established, they quickly exhaust the food supply.

The result? A lake full of stunted, skinny fish that never reach trophy size…
