ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – When viewers watch the daily newscast, they see the anchors on camera — but a full team behind the scenes is working to gather the news and produce the live show.
This week, a group of video production students got an up-close tour of how it all comes together.
From the classroom to the control room
The visitors were from the video production class taught by “Clare” at Steller Secondary School in Anchorage.
Even though the Career and Technical Education program is only in its second year, students are already producing weekly, student-led broadcasts — writing, shooting, editing, and anchoring their stories themselves.
Seeing the process — on a bigger scale
At the station, the students saw how those same steps are done at a professional level, including a tour of the newsroom, studio, and production control room, where the live show is operated.
A turn at the anchor desk
Before leaving, the students also had the chance to sit at the anchor desk, read from the teleprompter, and try delivering the weather forecast on the green screen. Station staff said the group picked it up quickly — and they wouldn’t be surprised if some of those students end up on-air, or behind the scenes, in the years ahead…
