Investigators Search Home Linked to Kristin Smarts Convicted Killer in New Lead

Authorities in California recently carried out a search warrant at a residence linked to Paul Flores, the man convicted of murdering Kristin Smart. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office announced that the search took place on Wednesday at a property on the 500 block of East Branch Street in Arroyo Grande. The home is occupied by Susan Flores, Paul Flores’ mother, according to public records.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that this investigation is connected to Kristin Smart’s disappearance and is the result of a search warrant authorized by a Superior Court judge. Officials reiterated their commitment to bringing closure to Smart’s family.

Paul Flores, 49, was convicted in October 2022 after a three-month trial for the murder of Smart, a 19-year-old California Polytechnic State University student who vanished in May 1996. Prosecutors stated Flores killed Smart during an attempted rape at his dorm room, and her remains have yet to be recovered.

San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow emphasized his office’s dedication to locating Kristin Smart’s remains, stating that all legal measures will be pursued to provide answers and support to the family.

In a separate 2024 ruling, a judge ordered Paul Flores to pay over $350,000 in restitution to the Smart family for expenses related to their daughter’s death. The family has expressed willingness to halt further restitution efforts if Flores reveals the location of Kristin’s body; however, Flores’ attorney maintains that he does not know where the remains are.

Attempts to reach Susan Flores for comment were unsuccessful. The investigation continues as authorities work to resolve the long-standing case.
