Venezuelan citizen sentenced for stealing $109K from Kenmore ATM

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Venezuelan citizen was sentenced to time served, ordered to pay restitution, and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after stealing nearly $300,000 from four ATMs — including one in Kenmore — the United States Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

David Jose Gomez Cegarra, 25, was ordered to pay a restitution of $294,820 after officials said he and several co-conspirators stole money from ATMs using a technique known as “ATM jackpotting.” ATM jackpotting involves removing an ATM’s cover and infecting its hard drive, or replacing it with an infected hard drive, officials said.

Cegarra and his co-conspirators stole $109,620 from an ATM at the Radius Federal Credit Union in Kenmore on Oct. 5, 2024, officials said. He and his co-conspirators also stole money from ATMs in Framingham, Mass., Dryden, N.Y., and Mount Vernon, Ill.
