Richmond SPCA welcomes 19 cats from Georgia amid wildfire relief effort

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond SPCA is lending a helping hand to shelter impacted by two wildfires in southern Georgia.

On Wednesday, May 5, staff received 15 kittens and four adult cats after an hours-long trip from Glynn County, Georgia. Two major wildfires in the region have scorched more than 54,000 acres over the past three weeks.

Richmond SPCA Director of Communication, Dori McGuire said shelters in the area needed to make space for pets directly impacted by the fires. McGuire said shelters across Virginia have stepped in to assist by taking in animals from the region, including the Richmond SPCA.

“The shelters in Georgia, with the number of people having to leave and being displaced, and animals being displaced from their homes, it can cause an overcrowding issue,” McGuire said…
