Feds Nail Sacramento Felon With 8 Years After Fentanyl, Gun Bust

A 23-year-old Sacramento man is headed to federal prison for eight years after a parole search at his home turned up fentanyl and a gun, according to prosecutors. U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez handed down the sentence Tuesday in Sacramento federal court for Gabriel Cabrera, who pleaded guilty in September to being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

Search Turned Up Video And Sales Messages

In a press release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said agents conducted a parole search of Cabrera on March 28, 2025. They reported finding a firearm and fentanyl hidden in another resident’s bedroom, along with drug paraphernalia and a ledger that investigators say was tied to sales.

Agents also searched Cabrera’s cellphone, where they found a video showing him holding the same firearm, according to the release. Messages between Cabrera and others discussing fentanyl transactions rounded out the case, giving prosecutors the evidence they say linked the drugs and the gun directly to the 23-year-old. Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Douglas Harman prosecuted the case, which federal officials said was brought as part of Operation Take Back America.

Prior Record And Local Toll

Court filings cited in the case show Cabrera had prior felony convictions for two counts of controlled-substance possession, inflicting corporal injury on a spouse and a negligent firearms discharge. Those convictions barred him from legally having a gun under federal law, according to the indictment.

The wider backdrop in Sacramento is grim. As reported by The Sacramento Bee, data from the Coroner’s Office indicate about 35 fentanyl-related deaths in Sacramento County so far this year. Hoodline previously covered Cabrera’s indictment and plea; the outlet noted he pleaded guilty last September.
