Brookville PD warns of scam promising car and $500k prize

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The Brookville Police Department has posted an alert about a fake Publishers Clearing House scam, which attempts to convince the potential victim they’ve won a new car and $500k.

The scammers use this lie to trick the victim into giving out their personal and / or financial information.

“One Brookville resident has already fallen victim to this scam, and another resident recently received a similar fraudulent call,” wrote the Brookville PD. “Stay alert, protect your information, and spread the word to help keep our community safe. Please talk to your relatives to warn them about this scam and others.”

MCSO warns of new scam targeting families of those in custody

It shared important reminders:

  • Publishers Clearing House will never call, text or email a person to say they’ve won a prize.
  • Publishers Clearing House doesn’t ask for payment, gift cards or personal banking information when asking people to claim winnings.

If you get a suspicious call or message sounding like this scam, hang up / don’t respond. Remember, you will not get in any type of trouble for hanging up on / ignoring a scammer…
