Shipyard worker killed in mishap at Jacksonville’s BAE facility, company says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A shipyard worker was killed Saturday in a workplace mishap while performing maintenance on heavy equipment at Jacksonville’s BAE Systems shipyard near Mayport, a company spokesperson told First Coast News.

The spokesperson said the worker was killed while performing maintenance Saturday on a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) at the BAE facility on Heckscher Drive. The SPMT is a piece of heavy equipment used to move ships from just outside of the water to further onshore facilities in the shipyard.

“Our deepest condolences are with the employee’s family, loved ones, and coworkers,” The BAE official said. “The safety of our employees remains our top priority. We will continue to investigate the cause of this tragic accident.”…
