Virginia State Police activate speed safety cameras in Botetourt and Roanoke counties

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Virginia State Police are asking travelers on Interstate 81 to slow down between mile markers 143 and 150 in Botetourt and Roanoke counties as speed safety cameras are installed in the work zone over the weekend.

Starting Monday, the cameras will monitor vehicles traveling northbound and southbound through the area, where the posted speed limit is 60 mph. Enforcement begins with a 30-day warning period. During that time, violators will receive warnings “to educate them about the program and enlist their support with improving work zone safety instead of a citation,” according to VSP.

After the warning period ends, drivers captured exceeding the posted speed limit may receive a $100 civil citation by mail. The fine is $100, but “there is no impact on a person’s driving record or vehicle insurance,” VSP said, adding that “each offense is validated by the Virginia State Police before a citation or warning is issued.”…
